My mother is surprised that I did not receive all their letters since they had written often and regular. She describes her work in the old age home in great detail. They had received the first letter from my sister who had safely arrived in London. My mother is very proud of her and copied the letter for me. My mother had a letter from my grandmother in Portugal who longs to see us all again. For my mother it is hard to get used to the idea that she will never be able to see her mother again. Out of pure love to my mother, my father had polished all the bits and pieces of brass in the flat. My mother met many friends who all send their best regards to me. She asks if the people that my sister is staying with have come to see me. (They never ever visited me nor ever took an interest in me.) = = = = = = = = = On the 1rst of September Germany invaded Poland and England declared war on Germany. From now on the letters reached me via Switzerland and soon after via Portugal. My grandmother Bertha Oppenheim nee Feilchenfeld had joined in Jan. 1938 her son Emil Oppenheim (my mothers brother) who lived in O’Porto since 1933 when he had to flee Germany, after having been in a concentration camp for being a Jew and a Social Democrat.
